Volume and ADT counts

A volume count records the number of vehicles passing a point on a road segment by direction, usually over 24 or 48 hours in 15-minute intervals. Average daily traffic (ADT) and AADT are derived from it and feed HPMS reporting, pavement design, corridor studies and travel demand models.

Counts are collected with pneumatic road tubes or by vision-based, non-intrusive methods, and are reviewed independently before release.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between ADT and AADT?

ADT is the average daily volume over the days counted. AADT is annualised, adjusting a short count with seasonal and day-of-week factors from continuous count stations. TDS delivers the counted volumes and ADT; AADT factoring follows the agency's published factors when requested.
